Sad Song for guitar

Here's a very short piece for guitar beginners. It might not be for absolute guitar beginners but it's quite close to that.

> First of all, download "Sad Song" for guitar.

To play this guitar composition the student should already be more or less comfortable with melodic playing in the first 3 strings of the guitar. The upper voice only uses 2 types of notes: the eight-note, and the half-note. And the lower voice also uses 2 types of notes: the dotted half-note, and the quarter-note. And all the bass notes are on the lower open strings of the guitar.

Snapshot of the guitar score
(the pdf version looks much better):

Now, 3 simple guitar practice tips:

  • First, learn the melody without the bass notes' accompaniment.
  • Then add the bass line but simplify it to a whole-note per measure so that you only focus on the simultaneous plucking of the upper and lower lines at the beginning of each measure.
  • And last, after learning the melody plus simplified bass, shorten the bass whole-note to a dotted half-note and add the quarter-note at the end of the measure. This quarter-note will function as an upbeat for each next measure and will hence give this guitar piece a forward moving pulse.

And that's it for now. I hope guitar teachers can make use of this little guitar piece.
